Product Introduction
Ultrasonic level meter (for bulk material level or liquid level) is a level measuring device with the features of non-contact, high reliability, cost-effective, easy to be installed and maintained.
Definition of Sonic and Ultrasonic
Sonic refers to sound that is audible to the human ear. Humans can hear frequencies up to 20 kHz. Ultrasonic, however, refers to sound frequencies above the human hearing range. Ultrasonic frequencies are higher than 20 kHz. Ultrasonic waves are used in industries for level measurement of liquids and solid materials. Ultrasonic level measurement is a non-contact method and is the most suitable technique for measuring the level of hot, corrosive, and boiling liquids. The typical frequency range used for ultrasonic level measurement is between 40 and 200 kHz.
Operating Principle
The transmitter in the sensor is electrically excited and sends an ultrasonic pulse toward the product surface, which reflects a portion of the pulse. The echo is then detected by the same sensor, now functioning as a directional microphone, and converted into an electrical signal. The transmission and reception of the pulse (acoustic transit time) are directly proportional to the distance between the sensor and the product surface.
Installation Position and Level Calculation Method
In the figure below, an ultrasonic level transmitter is mounted at the top of a tank that is half-filled with liquid. The reference point for all measurements is the bottom of the tank. The target level is indicated by “C,” and “B” represents the distance from the ultrasonic sensor to the liquid surface. Ultrasonic pulse signals are transmitted from the transmitter and reflected back to the sensor. The travel time of the ultrasonic pulse from the sensor to the target and back is calculated. The level “C” can be obtained by multiplying half of this time by the speed of sound in air. The measurement unit can be centimeters, feet, inches, etc.
Level = Speed of Sound in Air × Time Delay / 2
